I arrive from Vang Vieng at Pakse, half asleep and unsure when the next minivan south will show up.

I go for a short stroll near the river by the bus stand, walking to the point where it meets the Mekong.

morning

I pick up some groceries for breakfast while waiting.

The minivan leaves for Nakasong. The journey is long and rough.

midday

At Nakasong I look around for a boat to Don Det. It is hot, but the river breeze makes it bearable. I eat a spicy fried rice and meet someone who has been volunteering on the island for five weeks, who tells me oil bins are surprisingly useful there.

I board the boat to 4000 islands.
